The Indigenous Cadigal people lived around Sydney Harbour for at least 15,000 years. Then in 1788, British convicts arrived, triggering a profound transformation of the land and its culture.

These prisoners in a strange land were assigned to an area so steep and rough that they called it "The Rocks". But being a tough bunch themselves, they used the local sandstone to build a unique neighbourhood full of character and history.

My Sydney Rocks history walking tour takes visitors to mysterious alleyways, historic workers' houses, engineering marvels like the Argyle Cut, and grand warehouses like the Argyle Stores.

The tour of the Sydney Rocks also includes the western section of The Rocks, with spectacular views from Observatory Hill, lovely terrace houses and charming old pubs.

Along the way, we'll encounter sailors, thieves and bootleggers, and remarkable figures like the first governor Arthur Phillip, convict-turned-tycoon Mary Reibey, and union leader Jack Mundey who saved The Rocks from greedy developers in the 1970s.

And after all that exploring, we’ll relax with a drink in one of the oldest pubs in Sydney.
